Council to ask for more grant money for methane project

City Council will be applying for grant money to use toward the methane collection project at the old landfill on Clearview Drive.  The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy is committing $1 million to the project and the City plans to ask the Virginia Tobacco Commission for another $300,000.

American of Martinsville fire ruled accidental

Henry County Public Safety has ruled a fire Tuesday at American of Martinsville an accident.
Fire and safety responded at 11:34 a.m. Tuesday to the Redd Level plant off Rives Road. The fire originated in the finishing department and was contained there.  Sprinklers were activated.
No estimate of the damage has been made and no one was injured.

Martinsville man sentenced to 19 years

33 year-old Carlos Santana Morris was found guilty by a jury of drug charges involving cocaine. On Monday, Judge Jackson Kiser of the U.S. District Court in Danville sentenced Morris to 19 years and two months in prison. Sentencing guildlines were for over 20.

Average retail gasoline prices in Virginia have risen 3.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.63/g today. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.7 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.74/g, according to gasoline price website VirginiaGasPrices.com.

County expands recycling program to two additional sites Henry County is expanding its newest recycling effort to two additional sites.

Effective Tuesday, the Convenience Center locations in the Iriswood District (Axton Road) and Horsepasture District (Red Oak Road) will join the Jack Dalton Road location in accepting used motor oil, antifreeze, and vehicle batteries.

Collinsville man could get 108 years in prison

18 year-old Carl DeShawn Turner pleaded guilty this week to felony murder charged relates to three Collinsville men who were shot and killed.
Turner made his pleading in Henry County Circuit Court in a deal with prosecutors.  All 3 victims were shot in the head inside a Collinsville mobil home in June of 2008.
