According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory now in effect until 10 am this morning. Some sleet and snow changing to freezing rain with accumulations of up to 1 inch along with a trace to as much as a tenth of an inch of ice are expected continuing through late morning. Untreated roads especially bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads will become slick and hazardous. Enough accumulation of ice may occur on trees to cause some tree limbs to break resulting in spotty power outages.
The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors and the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia have failed to reach a settlement in the lawsuit over sectarian Christian prayers recited at the start of board meetings.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said the couple found dead near Penhook on Tuesday afternoon appear to have had an altercation at a Dumpster site Monday afternoon. Kim and Karen Yee, owners of the Penhook Boat Dock, were found dead in their Jeep on Ramsey Memorial Road in what the sheriff’s office is calling a murder-suicide. Lt. Todd Maxey said the couple was likely at a Dumpster site on Museville Road, southeast of Penhook in Pittsylvania County, on Monday between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
Patrick County’s Reverse 911 system, a telephone emergency notification, was used during the past weekend when a Martinsville man allegedly made threats against law enforcement officers. Initial reports indicated that the man had also made threats against schools, which caused “panic” and quick responses by the Patrick County school system, according to Sheriff Dan Smith. Those reports turned out to be false, Smith said. Kevin Allen Robinson, 22, of Martinsville, who was wanted on a felony probation violation warrant issued by Patrick County authorities, turned himself in Saturday, Feb. 16, Smith said.
A Bassett man was arrested Feb. 15 on multiple charges of larceny and burglary in Patrick County, according to a report from Sheriff Dan Smith. Kenneth Eugene Coleman, 46, of Bassett, was charged with possession of marijuana; breaking and entering, with Dennie Thompson listed as the victim; breaking and entering, with Ricky Taylor listed as the victim; grand larceny, with Ricky Taylor listed as the victim; grand larceny of an automobile with Ricky Taylor listed as the victim; and petit larceny, third or subsequent offense, with Dennie Thompson listed as the victim.
Angela Nolen and Cathy Bennett are accused of plotting to kill Nolen’s ex husband. According to the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the arrest warrant, Angela Nolen gave Cathy Bennett a note with instructions. Bennett then gave that note to a third party who wanted nothing to do with the plan. It’s that third party that alerted police. Both women were arrested Wednesday on felony charges involving solicitation to commit murder. Nolen was a kindergarten teacher and Bennett was a school nurse at Sontag Elementary School. Nolan was supposed to be in court Thursday but her hearing was postponed. Bennett had her bond hearing Thursday. Her bond was set at $60,000.
