Deputy and former Deputy arrested for Perjury

Glenn Brett Stokes / Mary Lois Markland

The Virginia State Police have arrested Henry County Deputy Glenn Brett Stokes, 39, of Martinsville, and former Deputy Mary Lois Markland, 58, of Ridgeway, for perjuy, or lying under oath.

Stokes has been released on a $500 unsecured bond and suspended without pay, pending the trial. Markland was released on a $1,000 unsecured bond.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt, but it is a grand jury’s decision that there is enough evidence to hod a trial.

A statement released by Sheriff’s Lane Perry reads as follows:

“Following a Virginia State Police investigation, Deputy Glen Stokes was arrested on one count of perjury. The Sheriff’s Office was aware of and cooperated with the investigation and with today’s proceedings. Deputy Stokes was released on a $500 unsecured bond and he has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the court proceedings. The Sheriff’s Office does not have any further comment at this time. Any questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Virginia State Police.”
