Unemployment down slightly in region

Across the state the average unemployment rate rose 0.3 percent from last month while our region declined slightly. Virginia’s unemployment rate is now at 7.3 percent, still well below the U.S. average of 9.5 percent.
Still at the top of list is Martinsville with 21.6 percent, down from 22 percent last month.

$700,000 in renovations needed before Social Services can move

Final approval for both a special use permit and a zoning change occurred at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting giving the Social Services office the go-ahead to move into the old MZM building in the Clearview Business Park. Booster Club missing $51,000

The Laurel Park Booster Club, a non-profit organization, says they are missing $51,000. 
An investigation makes police think the money most likely went missing during fundraisers at the bingo hall.
The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office presented evidence that has resulted in the indictment of one person last week, but most of the missing money is still unaccounted for.
